In the spring of 2016, NH Department of Environmental Services issued recommendations for voluntary testing of lead in drinking water at all schools and daycares. This action was in large part a result of lead toxicity to children from the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
On February 8, 2018, Governor Sununu signed Senate Bill 247 Prevention of Childhood Lead Poisoning. This law requires, among other actions, that all schools and licensed childcare facilities test lead in drinking water at all locations where water could possibly be ingested by children.
The ConVal School District contracted with a State of New Hampshire approved water testing vendor to perform the testing in all of our schools. A total of 590 fixtures were tested according to DES protocols. Any location that was found to be outside of the acceptable levels has been labeled and clear signage has been affixed to indicate that this is not to be used for drinking water. It is important to note that the areas that have signs are not areas where students would typically drink water.
The first round of testing was required to be completed by July 1, 2019, and to be done every 5 years thereafter.
Listed below are the results of the sampling at your school that was completed in 2019.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), also known as the Summer Meals Program, provides kids and teens with free meals when school is out.
The program was established to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. In 2018, the SFSP provided more than 1.5 million nutritious meals and snacks to children nationwide.
Each SFSP location will be open Monday through Friday, beginning on July 8th and ending on August 16th. Please note that all children 18 and under are eligible for this program and can access it at any of the locations listed below.

Congratulations to SMS eighth-grader Daniel McCall who is the winner of the 2019 statewide American Legion Junior Oratorical Contest!
The contest took place recently at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College in Manchester. The purpose of the New Hampshire American Legion Junior Oratorical Contest is to allow students in grades 6 through 8 an opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the Constitution of the United States.
There are two parts to the contest — the prepared oration, whose subject must be on some phase of the Constitution and is from 3 to 5 minutes in duration, and the assigned topic where contestants are asked to speak for 2 to 4 minutes on a topic relating to the Constitution.
Contest participants are judged on depth of knowledge of the Constitution, originality of their oration, skill in selecting examples, voice, diction, posture, poise, eye contact, and use of gestures.
The junior oratorical contest serves as a stepping stone for the American Legion National High School Oratorical Contest and helps participants develop the ability to address an audience at a young age.
