Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to share with you that all middle and high school students will be provided with a district-issued Chromebook during the month of September. Having a Chromebook will allow students to access digital course content and materials, including digital textbooks. Having a Chromebook will also support students to meet the following standards:
Empowered Learner - Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
Digital Citizen - Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.
Knowledge Constructor - Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
Innovative Designer - Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.
Computational Thinker - Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.
Creative Thinker - Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.
Before distributing district-issued Chromebooks to students, students and parents/guardians need to sign and return to school the ConVal School District’s Student & Parent/Guardian Chromebook Loan Agreement. A hard copy of this form is being sent home with high school students today and middle school students next week.
This agreement requires students and parents/guardians to review the District’s Blended Learning Parent & Student Handbook, which includes the District’s Internet Use and Responsible Use Policy for Students. These documents can also be found, along with additional resources, at the http://convalsd.net/curriculum-and-assessment/11-initiative/orientation-resources/. Hard copies of these resources can be provided upon request.
For those of you interested and available, I invite you to join me along with some members of the District’s Blended Learning Leadership Team next Wednesday, September 5th from 6:00 to 6:30 in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre at ConVal High School for a presentation on Blended Learning in the ConVal School District. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for parents and guardians to ask questions. This presentation will be repeated on Thursday, September 6th from 6:00 to 6:30 at Great Brook Middle School in Antrim.

Welcome to grade 8 and the Sage Team. We are very excited to be working with you all during the upcoming school year. We would like to remind you all that eighth graders are required to do 20 hours of community service. You are welcome to complete as many hours as possible over the summer. Community service paperwork is available on the school website.
We want you to have a successful school year and organization is a big part of that. In order to assist you with organization, we would like you to have the following:

Welcome to South Meadow School! We are very excited about our new school year! We will be studying a variety of subjects and topics throughout the school year. You will learn about ecology and ecosystems, the place value system and fractions, and how our country was formed, to name a few. With the ChromeBooks that will now be available to all fifth grade students, you will have the opportunity to explore computer technology and learn a variety of ways to use it in your projects and presentations. Welcome to the 6th grade! We are so excited to see you again! We are your 6th grade teachers: Mrs. Koban, Mrs. Groleau, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Brophy, Ms. Kneeland, and Mrs. Weston. We are ready to get the school year started. The first day of school is Thursday, August 30th.

Email is the best way to connect your teachers. We want you to be successful this year. If you or your parents have questions or concerns during the school year, it is best to email the teacher or specialist involved.
Community Service
Have you had time for Community Service this summer? You will need 10 hours of service in 6th grade. The forms are online on the SMS web site. You can carry over five extra hours from fifth grade. You may return completed summer forms to your advisor on the first day of school. Remember, 7.5 additional hours of community service can be carried over to 7th grade at the end of the year!
